Primary Classroom

Three to six years old. All learning activities support children in choosing meaningful and challenging work at their own interest and ability level. This child-directed engagement strengthens motivation, supports attention, and encourages responsibility.

Uninterrupted blocks of work time (typically 3 hours) allow children to work at their own pace and fully immerse themselves in an activity without interruption. Your child’s work cycle involves selecting an activity, performing it for as long it remains interesting, cleaning up the activity and returning it to the shelf, and making another work choice. This cycle respects individual variations in the learning process and facilitates the development of coordination, concentration, independence, and a sense of order while facilitating your child’s assimilation of information.

To learn more about the specific areas of learning in our classroom, see our Primary Classroom Video on the Our Classroom page.

We ask families to consider a three-year commitment. Montessori children benefit from being in the classroom with their teachers and peers for three years. This allows teachers to truly know and engage with children while offering support in a meaningful way. This also allows children to become contributing members of the classroom as learners and leaders. If your child is older and will be with us for a shorter time, we aim to make their learning experience well-rounded and meaningful.
