"If writing serves to correct, or rather, to direct and perfect the mechanism of speech in the child, reading assists in the development of ideas and language. In brief, writing helps a child physiologically and reading helps him socially."

~ Dr. Maria Montessori (The Discovery of the Child)

What a marvelous way to see the wonder of reading. We learn so much from reading, from getting lost in the pages of new worlds. We love our little libraries in both the Primary and the Toddler Environment. Books are such a great way to share so much of our world that we can't always experience first hand (traveling to far off places), to find reassurance in our shared experiences by reading books that reflect our lives, to build our understanding of the world we live in.

While writing comes before reading in the terms of development, it is NEVER too early to be exposed and experience books either by being read to or taking a moment in a quiet spot and getting lost in the pictures.

This week the classrooms are learning a bit more about black history with books like: The ABCs of Black History by Rio Cortez, Full Full Full of Love by Trish Cooke, and Courageous People by Heidi Poelman just to name a few.

We would LOVE to expand our current library with new books for both classrooms. If you have found your bookshelf overflowing and are looking to share some, please consider donating to Wild Fern.
