Giving

"We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe and are connected with each other to form one whole unity"
~ Dr. Maria Montessori

'Tis the season to not only give thanks but to give back. This idea of being a community and stewards of our community is a big part of the Montessori pedagogy and philosophy. It is something that is built into the classroom from the moment the children enter. They know this is their space, and they work together to build the community we see today.

So how can we translate this into the everyday real world and with our busy lives?
It isn't easy, but it is possible. An article I found on Parent.com gives some great suggestions. My favorite one is to think outside of the box and find what works for you.

There are so many opportunities to give back in our community and so many of them are family friendly.

  • Enrichmond is focused on serving the people, parks, and public spaces in Richmond. And have a variety of ways to volunteer.

  • Connect with a nursing home or assisted living facility and make new friends at the same time. Bringing the kids to visit with the elderly that live far from their own families builds bonds beyond our imagination.

  • Lend a hand to the RVA Community Fridges by offering some much-needed nutrition to those struggling

  • Spend some time digging in the dirt (something we all know our littles LOVE to do!) and help one of our biggest supporters the Virginia Free Farm. Their mission is to provide FREE nutritious, responsibly produced healthy food to our neighbors in need.

There are so many more options, but I don't want to overwhelm all of you. If what I shared doesn't strike a chord, check out Volunteer Match. Let them know what works for you, what you are passionate about and they will match you with organizations that need volunteers. Easy Peasy!
