Montessori & Nature

It seems Spring has Sprung! And with that comes more time outside. As you can see, we couldn't be happier about that!.

Montessori education and pedagogy are deeply connected to nature. As Dr. Montessori wrote,

"Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and when the grass of the meadows is wet with dew, let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath its shade; let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning."

She understood that connection with nature is crucial to the child's development. Being outside in nature gives children the opportunity to really experience and develop their senses, coordination, and curiosity. This is why we at Wild Fern Montessori go outside no matter what as long as it is safe. Because there is so much value in experiencing all of nature, even the wet, cold, and muddy - or maybe especially the wet, cold, and muddy. What better kind of weather is there when you are on the hunt for earth worms?
